Description:

Car campground off of Grade Valley Road.  Vegetation is pine trees and high country sage.  A dozen or so campsites within the campground.  Grade Valley Rd closes during the winter months, which makes this camp accessible only by bike, horse or hiking.  There are a few trails that lead out of camp.

Pine Springs Campground Survey - 10-17-2025 - by Jason Miller

Date: 10-17-2025
Surveyor Name:Jason Miller
Camp Description:Originally wanted to camp at Fishbowls Trailhead, but learned that it's not for camping - only for trail heading.  Oh, well.  Pine Springs looked pretty good.  We were right.

Twelve sites arranges on a ring with most on the inside of the ring.  It seemed those, too, allowed a camper to drive their car into the site.  We camped in Site 12, one of the few on the outside of the ring that keeps cars away from the fire ring and picnic table.  The view was great, and we couldn't really see any other campers (until a group moved into Site 1 across the road from us).

Our visit was something of a cultural experience for us.  It was deer season.  Rifle season, specifically, and Pine Springs served as 'deer camp' for about eleven other groups of hunters.  This meant lots of camo and some blaze orange (not as much as I'd expected, honestly).  It also meant lots of early (noisy) risers and, even the evening, enough carousing to make us think twice about our site.  But we learned on our last morning that the topography of the campground makes sound carry from the front (where we were) to the back (where others were).  This meant we couldn't hear much of the carousing, but they were all annoyed enough to complain when the folks at Site 1 played their music a little too loud and too early.  The silence that followed was beautiful.

Overall, a nice campground with good camp sites.  We'll be back.

Water Source Details:Tiny spring just north of Site 12. Enough water for bees to drink.
Weather Conditions:Clear and cool. Temps from mid-70s to mid-30s. Healthy frost in the morning.
Pine Springs Campground Survey - 09-04-2023 - by Nate K

Camp Description:Camp was in great shape, new fire rings, lots of brush cleared. Unfortunately some Labor Day campers managed to not put out their fire completely. I stopped in just to have a sandwich late Monday afternoon to a lot of smoke and a healthy fire going at the back campsite. I only had a gallon of water to drown it and it barely even put a dent in. Covered it with dirt and cursed whoever left it like that.

Date: 01-14-2018
Surveyor Name:Craig R. Carey
Camp Description:The intrepid mountain men of Troop 111 (Ventura) backpacked the closed road into Pine Springs this past weekend for a quick overnighter. Exited via Piano Box Loop for some additional mileage. Camp is in fine shape, empty but for our crew. Some water in the lower marsh, and 20–25 gallons in the trough just below camp entrance; froze over at night. Latrines sporting nice new KEEP OUT signs.
Water Source:Trickle
Water Source Details:Marsh just below spring very low; rain water in trough.
Weather Conditions:Cold and clear
